An Attribute to Value

This post is for my brothers and sisters in Christ (Christians). If that doesn’t interest you, feel free to move on with your daily browsing…

If you had to choose an attribute from the below list, which would you choose?

  1. Wisdom
  2. Understanding
  3. Counsel
  4. Might (aka Power)
  5. Knowledge
  6. Fear of the Lord

Well, according to Isaiah 11:1-3 Jesus chooses #6. The list are some of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit; Isaiah says that Jesus delights in the fear of the Lord.

In simple terms, what is ‘the fear of the Lord‘? I like to consider it respect. It is having a clear picture of who God is, and who we are in relation to him. Yes, God loves all of humankind, and yes, if we accept him as Lord, then our sins are forgiven. But the story shouldn’t end there.

If we accept him as Lord – or another word Master – then we are acknowledging that he is in control. A person who is under a Master doesn’t do what they want, but what the Master asks of them.

Having a healthy respect for God means that we acknowledge who he is, and act accordingly. If we want to be like Jesus then we should cultivate a similar attitude towards God. Respecting God means we are more likely to pursue holiness, more likely to fight temptation and more focused on having the fruits of the spirit and following the example of Jesus.
